Alleged $190M Nomad Hacker Faces US Extradition After Arrest
A Russian-Israeli citizen, Alexander Gurevich, has been detained at Ben-Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv while attempting to flee to Russia. He stands accused of exploiting a critical vulnerability in the Nomad crypto bridge, leading to a $190 million theft in 2022.
U.S. authorities filed an eight-count indictment against Gurevich in August 2023, followed by a formal extradition request in December. The suspect had recently returned to Israel on April 19 before being summoned to court for extradition proceedings.
In a curious legal maneuver, Gurevich changed his name prior to the arrest—a move that failed to prevent his apprehension. The case highlights growing international cooperation in prosecuting cross-border crypto crimes.
